The train ride from Kandy to Ella is consistently ranked among the most beautiful rail journeys on Earth. Winding through emerald tea estates, misty mountains, and colonial-era bridges, it's the kind of experience every Sri Lanka visitor swears by.
The Route
The full journey runs from Kandy (500m elevation) to Ella (1,041m), covering roughly 160 km in about 6–7 hours. The most photogenic stretch is between Nanu Oya (near Nuwara Eliya) and Ella, where the train crosses the iconic Nine Arches Bridge and passes through the Demodara loop — an engineering marvel where the track spirals inside a hill.
Which Ticket Class?
First Class (Reserved)
Air-conditioned, observation car with large windows. Seats must be booked in advance (often weeks ahead through the Railway Department's website). Comfortable but the sealed windows can make photography harder. Around LKR 1,000 (~$3 USD).
Second Class (Reserved)
Our top recommendation. Fans instead of A/C, windows that open fully — ideal for photography and actually feeling the mountain air. Reserved seats available online. About LKR 600.
Third Class (Unreserved)
Cheapest option (~LKR 300) with a true local experience. Can be crowded, but if you stand in the open doorway (carefully) — the views are unmatched. No booking needed, buy on the day.
Best Seat Strategy
Sit on the right side when heading from Kandy to Ella for the best valley views. If you're in second or third class, board early for a window seat. Alternatively, alternate between sides — both offer different spectacular perspectives.
What to Photograph
- Nine Arches Bridge — the train crosses it slowly; lean out for the shot
- Tea pickers on hillsides — vivid green against the morning mist
- Tunnel exits — emerging from darkness into a panoramic valley is cinematic
- Demodara Loop — look down and you'll see the track you were just on below
- Waterfalls — several cascades are visible only from the train
