Yala National Park is Sri Lanka's most visited wildlife reserve and home to the highest density of leopards in the world. Here's everything you need for an unforgettable game drive.
Why Yala?
Spanning 979 square kilometres along the southeast coast, Yala's Block 1 packs an extraordinary concentration of wildlife into a relatively compact area. Beyond leopards, you'll encounter Asian elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, wild boar, spotted deer, and over 200 bird species including flamingos and painted storks.
Best Time to Visit
The park is open year-round except during the annual maintenance closure in September. The dry season (February – July) is peak time: water holes shrink, forcing animals into the open. Leopard sighting probability is highest from February to April when vegetation is sparse and cats sun themselves on rocky outcrops.
Morning vs Afternoon Drives
Dawn Safari (5:30 AM – 10:00 AM)
The most productive slot. Gates open at 6 AM and the first hour is golden — animals are active, the light is magical for photography, and you beat the midday heat. Leopards are most likely spotted in the first 90 minutes. Our drivers know the territory and will have you positioned at the gate well before opening.
Afternoon Safari (2:00 PM – 6:00 PM)
A calmer experience with fewer jeeps. Elephants congregate around water holes, and the sunset over Patanangala beach inside the park is an iconic shot. Bird watching is excellent in the late afternoon.
What to Bring
- Binoculars — essential for spotting leopards resting in distant trees
- Camera with telephoto lens — a 200mm minimum; 400mm+ ideal
- Sunscreen and hat — the jeeps are open-top and the tropical sun is fierce
- Light layers — surprisingly cool at dawn, especially in January/February
- Water and snacks — there are no shops inside the park
- Dust mask or bandana — the dry-season trails kick up a lot of dust
Etiquette & Tips
- Stay seated in the jeep — standing up startles animals and is technically a park violation
- Keep voices low when near a sighting; sudden noise causes animals to retreat
- Don't pressure your driver to chase animals — patience yields better encounters
- Carry a plastic bag for rubbish; nothing should be left in the park
