Galle Fort is a 36-hectare walled city perched on a headland at the southern tip of Sri Lanka's coast. Built by the Portuguese in 1588 and expanded by the Dutch from 1649, it's now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the island's most atmospheric places to wander.
Getting There
Galle is roughly 120 km south of Colombo — about 2.5 hours by expressway or 4 hours along the beautiful coastal road through Bentota, Hikkaduwa, and Unawatuna. The drive along the coast is one of Sri Lanka's most scenic, and with a SerenDrive chauffeur you can stop wherever you like along the way.
Walking the Ramparts
Start at the main gate and walk clockwise along the top of the ramparts. The full circuit is about 1.5 km and takes 30–45 minutes without stops. You'll pass the lighthouse, Flag Rock (the iconic sunset spot), the clock tower, and the old Dutch hospital. The rampart walk at golden hour (5:00–6:15 PM) is essential — the Indian Ocean light is extraordinary.
What to See Inside
The Lighthouse
Built in 1938, it's the oldest light station in Sri Lanka. While you can't go inside, the area around it is the fort's most photographed corner — especially at sunrise when the white tower catches the first light.
Dutch Reformed Church
Dating to 1755, this beautifully preserved church features an interior with original pews, ornate chandeliers, and gravestones set into the floor. It's still an active church and open to visitors outside service hours.
The Streets
The fort's grid of narrow streets is a mix of colonial Dutch buildings, boutique hotels, art galleries, and gem shops. Pedlar Street and Leyn Baan Street are the main commercial arteries. Wandering without a map is encouraged — the fort is small enough that you can't really get lost.
Flag Rock
The southwestern bastion where the entire south coast opens up before you. This is where locals and tourists alike gather every evening for sunset. Arrive 30 minutes early for a good seat on the wall.
Where to Eat
- A Minute by Tuk Tuk — rooftop café with fort views; great for breakfast and fresh juice
- Fort Printers — elegant courtyard dining in a restored colonial mansion
- Posse Café — specialty coffee and pastries in a beautifully designed space
- Mama's Galle Fort Roof Café — iconic budget spot; rice and curry with a rooftop view
- Street-side kottu roti stalls — just outside the main gate after dark
Nearby Beaches
The fort sits between two excellent beaches. Unawatuna (10 minutes east) is a sheltered crescent of golden sand ideal for swimming. Jungle Beach (15 minutes, accessed by trail) is a small secluded cove surrounded by jungle — worth the short hike.
How Long to Stay
Most travelers spend a half-day walking the fort and an evening for sunset. If you want to explore the cafés, galleries, and nearby beaches properly, stay overnight — the fort after the day-trippers leave (after 4 PM) has a completely different, quieter energy.
